3 years in prison for speaking is OK?

Is the EU governments justified when they imposed up to three-year prison sentences for those convicted of denying genocide such as the mass killing of Jews during World War II and the massacre in Rwanda in the 1990s?
Answer:
I do believe the sentace is extreme, community service is much more appropriate, but it is a crime that disgusts many Europeans, mainly Germans and French, that feel that denial of the Holocaust is as bad a crime as treason.

They never want their countries to revert to nazism or fascism and for history to repeat itself.
Seems ridiculous and illegal also. It really sets a dangerous precedence for, to say the least, being stupid.
The EU is good at slowly stripping away rights that Americans take for granted. The EU has already removed the equivalent to our 2nd Amendment; why not let them strip away the equivalent to our 1st Amendment. You may not like what somebody says, but they should have the right to say it.
It doesnt seem right at all. There were more than just jews killed then too. I could see some 20-50 hours of community service for the denial being a little more appropriate, but, if people dont want to admit that Hitler was evil, and an inciter of mass murder, then what are they ??
